Thomas Creek Trail
This is one of our favorite trails , we call it the dog trail because it has a couple year round creeks which make it very popular with local dog walkers . It's also popular with mountain bikers so it can get busy . These trails are right off highway 431 which goes up to Lake Tahoe and are within 20 minutes of downtown Reno . We run it as a loop heading south , it is about 6.5 miles all but the last 3/4's are single track . This can also be run as loop on to the Jones Creek trail which makes it @11 miles . This trail starts out at 6,000' and climbs up a series of switchbacks to Dry Pond at 7,000' . If the Jones Creek loop is added it climbs up to 8,300 .
The trail is a nice single track with some roots and rocks along the creeks but mostly very runable . Both the lower up and the down are along the creeks . Thomas Creek and Whites Creek are year round but Jones creek has been dry in the late summer .
The top of the loop is Dry Pond this year it wasn't dry it's at @ 7,000' , with a great view of Slide Mt and the Mt Rose Ski area
This is the Mt Rose Wilderness area which can be accessed from the trail . From there it links up to the Tahoe Rim Trail , Lake Tahoe is right behind the mountains @ 18-20 miles
