Even though I continued to move around after the injury including two trail races - Echo Summit 10 mile and the Lost Sierra 23k ( 14+ miles ) my quad had shut down and really atrophied leaving my right side weak and floppy . After the Lost Sierra I did not attempt to run and just walked the dogs on a 2 mile loop at lunch at Hidden Valley parks and did my usual chores until surgery.
October 18- surgery
October 24 - Stitches out, met with doctor
October 24 - Decided to ignore doctors advice
October 26 - First therapy appointment with Larry very encouraging , started at 120 degrees but still can't straighten it . He told me I could walk as far as I could tolerate without limping and to try using a walking pole to help . Bike on the trainer up to 30 minutes .Next appointment Tuesday 10-30
October 27 - Walked 8/10s with the dogs and the walking pole which I am too lame to figure out how to walk with so I ended up carrying it . My best pace was 20 minutes a mile max speed 3 mph
October 28 - Did yard chores and went to town left it pretty sore so that was it for the day . Brian put my bike on the trainer .
October 29- Walked a mile with the dogs best pace 17:01 max speed 3.5 mph carried the pole but still could not coordinate walking with it . Rode 30 minutes on my bike on the trainer . I must have liked that seat at some point but I truly hate it now , I felt like a hooker after the Fleet came in .
October 30- Rode the stationary bike at the gym for 30 minutes went to therapy . Larry the PT was not impressed with my Hokas , he had gone to the website but couldn't find any research to back up the theory behind them . I'm not 100% sold on them either but they do help my foot by protecting the joint and they are springy protecting my knee . I don't really plan to run in them much other than my first runs on pretty well groomed fire roads . He did point out how rigid they are and that makes it impossible to use your foot as nature intended . Good point but that's also what's protecting my foot . He did spend some time trying to fix my left hip and crooked pelvis from months of limping on my right leg . I have briefly covered my long history of being beaten to shit by horses but didn't really want to go into detail . Sure it all compounds and catches up with you but I don't want to hear anymore ..."well you might try a different sport ". Like what ? the horses are how I got this way to begin with last time I rode my bike I ended up in a wreck .
October 31 - Happy Halloween forgot my GPS and trekking pole so I'll walk the dogs for @30 minutes at Hidden Valley . I have on my Brooks Pure Grit which I am also not sold on they are slippy on the trails and I can feel every rock I run/walk over but I paid full price for them so I'll wear them until they fall apart . Couldn't bring myself to ride the bike last night , fire crotch and boredom just aren't as much fun as you'd think .
